Education Week’s new writer Liana Heitin reported in an article last week that many observers believe that the Common Core debate is impeding the progress of science education in general, and the Next Generation Science Standards in particular. It’s well worth a read, despite the fact that one of the observers she quotes is me. (“Common core seems to be sucking up all of the educational oxygen.”)
Yes, you should read it, anyway.
But of course, science isn’t the only important educational issue being ignored while Common Core occupies center stage. It is also impossible to start a meaningful discussion about whether or not our society should invest in educating the top quartile well. The default answer to that question is “no”.
