University of Southern Maine denies Physics Department termination linked to startup of new majors in tourism and sports management

The University of Southern Maine has denied that the planned termination of the university’s Physics Department is linked to the startup of new majors in tourism and sports management.  In responding to a tweet asking whether the Physics Department was being cut to help pay for the new tourism and sports management majors, the university said “We did add those new programs in recent years, but the review of the Physics program is unrelated.”

The USM Physics Department has been graduating about three physics majors per year.
